SAVOUR THE COFFEE

Coffee? “Why would anyone care about coffee?”, others say. It’s a drink and that’s it. It’s tasty and that’s good. Not everyone of us actually like coffee, is it the taste, the smell, or maybe their practice does not include coffee? Well, I don’t know! We have our own reason to like and to dislike coffee, but I want say that there are a lot, I mean a lot of interesting things about coffee. Google is there to the rescue and it helped me searched anything I want to know. I actually enjoy reading every word these different researchers say because as a coffee addict I got to know not just the different types of coffee or how it came about but I got to know plenty of benefits in consuming coffee, not that I don’t have knowledge or somewhat about coffee.
Actually, I would like to start how I got to know coffee myself. I am from the Province of Benguet and I can always say “I am proud to be an Igorot!”, because not all of us acknowledge where they came from. From childhood to teenage life, I grew where coffee grows and prosper wherein they surrounds me. I grew not knowing all of the benefits from it, but I am informed that it is good for the health. I learned how to plant, harvest, pick, apply dry/ wet process, roast and to pound coffee beans. As a child, I already develop my instinct to drink coffee now and then that it became my addiction but an addiction in a good way wherein I know when to stop when I must.
These interesting facts about coffee excites me because I have no knowledge about any of them not until I got this speech I have to make. They are proven to be true by different researcher, from different department and professions. Proven to be good and healthy for us, I won’t force you to like coffee as much as I am but I want to share what I learned about coffee. Well actually these can be found in the internet if you want to learn more, just ask Mr. Google himself.
I discovered that coffee is indeed a fruit, namely coffee cherry or coffee berry because it is considered a stone fruit having a pit in the middle that contains raw coffee beans. The fruit of the coffee plant is discarded and beans are then roasted, ground, and brewed into a hot beverage. I got to know the coffee bean is called a bean not because they are a true bean but just because of the resemblance and coffee are seeds but instead of called coffee seed they prefer using coffee bean. Isn’t it funny knowing these about coffee, simply knowing its nature is entertaining.
Did you know that coffee prolongs life? Me neither, journal says from JAMA Internal Medicine “Drinking coffee even more than 8 cups a day lowers the risk of death within a 10-year follow-up period.” Also from a health line nutritionist, the compounds of the coffee like antioxidants protects against oxidative stress in our body. Oxidation is believed to have one of the mechanism behind aging and serious condition like heart disease. An important study in 2012 in consumption in 402,260 people aged 50-71 observed that those who drank most coffee was significantly less likely to have died 12-13- year study period. Isn’t it amazing, my first reaction was “Wow! I got to live a little longer?”. Doesn’t any of us wanted that?
However, too much is not good, in drugs there is drug overdose and we also have a coffee overdose. Coffee is technically a drug because it is addictive. According to the Mayo Clinic, caffeine up to 400 milligrams a day to an adult can cause overdose and an adolescent should limit to no more than 100 mg a day. High caffeine dosses can also cause irregular heartbeat, seizure, hormonal imbalance and depression while other says coffee can derive depression. Intake of coffee can elevate the positivity mode of a person. Stated in the Australian and New Zealand Journal of psychiatry, there is an 8% reduced risk of developing depression per average cup of caffeine a day. It shows that coffee helps us in many ways but keep in mind that too much can kill us.
